I recently reconnected with a client who had been considering resignation due to workplace stress and conflict with their manager. Their mental health and sleep were suffering, so I expected them to share plans to leave. Instead, they told me their first week back was surprisingly positive. What changed? A simple piece of positive feedback on work they’d submitted. That small gesture lifted a weight off their shoulders, restored hope, and improved their confidence and relationship with their manager. It was a powerful reminder that strong emotions are temporary and that kindness can transform someone’s outlook.
Reflecting on their experience made me ask: stay or leave? Personally, I need to feel valued and enjoy going to work. I wouldn’t last in an environment with poor communication and hostility - especially in today’s job market where people have options. But my sister is the opposite. When she faced a workplace witch hunt, she refused to quit. She stayed, pushed through, and ultimately thrived in a new role within the same company. So, who’s right? Both approaches are valid. Sometimes the healthiest choice is to change your environment; other times, adversity builds resilience and skills.
The takeaway is simple: starting the year with kindness, clear communication, and a shared plan sets the tone for a workplace where people feel valued and go the extra mile.
Tips for 2026
- Establish team rituals: Weekly planning sessions or monthly retrospectives create rhythm, alignment, and connection.
- Declutter processes: Remove unnecessary meetings, outdated tools, and duplicated work. Simplicity fuels productivity.
- Create psychological safety: Encourage questions and feedback. Make it safe to admit mistakes and celebrate learning.
- Normalise rest and boundaries: Promote breaks, leave, and disconnecting after hours. Rest is a prerequisite for high performance.
- Recognise strengths and foster appreciation: Acknowledge individual contributions. Gratitude boosts morale and strengthens relationships.
