Doing more with less: why water efficiency matters
Water use efficiency is more than a buzz-phrase - it’s about making every drop count. For farmers, this can mean maximising yield per unit of water, reducing wastage, or adopting water recycling practices. With increasing pressure to produce more with fewer resources, improving water use efficiency is critical for long-term resilience.
About the project
Over the past 18 months, Pinion Advisory has partnered with the TAS Farm Innovation Hub, funded by the Federal Government’s Future Drought Fund, to help Tasmanian farmers strengthen their water management skills and confidence. The goal? To support farmers in building resilience against drought and climate variability.
What farmers told us
At the start, Tasmanian farmers shaped the project by identifying their priorities:
- Irrigation maintenance and system performance checks
- Stock water system design
- Dam construction and water licensing
- Financial analysis for irrigation investment decisions
- Irrigation scheduling support
- Practical training to reduce key-person dependency
Delivering practical solutions
In response, we developed a suite of free tools and resources - available now on the TAS Farm Innovation Hub website. These include workshops and guides designed to help farmers move from gut-feel to data-driven strategies, improving production while reducing water wastage.
A lasting legacy
‘The Pinion Advisory team has enjoyed collaborating with retailers, industry groups, education providers, and consultants to deliver resources that empower Tasmanian farmers,’ says Pinion project manager Jo Jones. ‘Our aim is to provide practical solutions that make a real difference on-farm.’
